Man In The Mirror
see relatedI'm Starting With The [Girl] In The Mirror
Some of you know that I recently got hired to work at Jo-Ann Fabrics again. Most of you know how much I despise the way the employees are treated. I thought it was just at one store, but that just seems to be the way the policies are given to managers when they are trained. So I started working at a new store, and promptly quit two days later.
Then I returned to the job hunt. (I say that pretending I wasn't waiting every day that I was hired at Jo-Anns for a better place of business to call me.) I was applying to anywhere and everywhere. Seriously, little ol' size 7 me actually applied at Torrid. I think they only gave me an application and took the application back because of that whole "equal opportunity" thing. I'm pretty sure the girl behind the counter promptly threw it in the trash as soon as I walked out.
I realized that (aside form seeing if they would hire me), I was applying to these places just to find a job to make money. It wasn't anything I really wanted to do for a long time, just something seasonal until a better opportunity came along. That was my whole focus. I was never even planning to stay very long at any of these places. And I hate being the person focused on money. Hello, I go to fashion school because it's what I love doing and my mom convinced me that I shouldn't do something because it is "practical" (like, four years of DU business school to get a desk job for the rest of my life). I am not one to be focused on having the fanciest stuff (seriously, the reason I want a VW is the no-cost maintenance/oil changes and the reason I want a Prius would be the gas mileage and environmentally-friendly-ness). So why was I getting a job just to get a job?
The school tweeted an opening for students to be a personal assistant in a fashion design company. I followed the link and read the information, but decided it wasn't for me. Too hectic, and that's the reason I left Jo-Anns (at least, that's the reason I gave my supervisor
). But I started looking around the site at the rest of the job postings (Barefootstudent.com) I saw a few that looked interesting, mostly in childcare or personal assistant openings. I told myself I couldn't do it because it wasn't part of the "approved" career options for students (the career options list for students being retail jobs, retail jobs, or retail jobs). So I didn't respond to any listings.
The next day, I started running...er, uhm, walking in the mornings (the reasoning behind that is a whole other story) before school. And the first (and only, so far) day (yesterday) of that I decided to put my Michael Jackson music on shuffle. The song "Man In The Mirror" came on at the end of my time on the treadmill. And it really got me thinking.
When I got home from school, I logged onto the site again. At the top, or at least very near the top was one I thought was really interesting, but I wasn't sure if I would be a good candidate. So I left it open and looked around a bit more. I sent my resume to one other listing, but there weren't many more I wanted. So I went back and decided to go for it. Within 15-30 minutes I got a call saying she wanted me to come interview right away before the rest for the day. I made it down there, and we talked quite a bit longer than she had originally planned (i.e.- her next interview came up and she had her go wait in the lobby).
I was supposed to start today, but due to a forgotten basketball game and team dinner we pushed it back to Tuesday. But everything is working out well, like it was meant to be. I'll tell you more about it as I get started (obviously, not much to tell now).
The main thing I wanted to say is directed at not only people looking for a job in this tough economy, but for everyone: Don't give up hope, and don't take your focus off the important things in life. If you focus on what you like to do, and not what you think you have to do to get ahead, you will go very far.*
Later!!
P.S.: If you have Twitter, a good source of daily inspiration and motivation that I have found is Rev. Run's Twitter. Seriously, in addition to getting it in the feed on Ubertwitter, I get it in text alerts. It keeps me encouraged.
P.P.S.: Only 9 days until Halloween! If you wish to donate and help Team Selena (including myself) raise $1,000,000 for Unicef, follow the link in the header (right under the Twitter box). And thanks to everyone who has already donated.
P.P.P.S: I changed my background, you like? I thought I needed a change from the icy, mountain-y background. So I found something a little more "California". It very closely resembles the picture on my phone's background...And my ringtone is the beginning of Sugar Ray's "Boardwalk"... I think I see a theme here....
*Note: This does not mean don't listen to your boss or neglect your duties at home just because you don't want to do that particular task. It just means that if you have an opportunity to choose between doing what you love and doing something else for better money or status or whatever, don't choose the one that just looks better on a resume or makes you of higher status for all the wrong reasons.

It's October! (Uhm, duh!) And that means Halloween time.
You know, dressing up as dead things, or funny things. Or dead funny things (roadkill, anyone?)
It's also the perfect time to help out the less fortunate by participating in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. UNICEF provides immunizations, school supplies, and other necessities to children around the world.
This year, I have joined Selena Gomez's team to help raise $1,000,000 for UNICEF. My personal goal is to raise $50. If I reach that, I will make it higher.
If you can, please click here to donate. Or, if you would like to join our team in reaching our $1,000,000 goal, there is a link on that page to join the team. There is also a link to that page at the top of my site, right under the Twitter box.
Thank you for helping us reach our goal and helping children everywhere through UNICEF!
*EDIT: I fixed the link*

Shout!: The Beatles in Their Generation

Yesterday, I decided I was going out to find a lunchbox. So I wore my lunchbox finding clothes:
Well, I guess those would be my lunchbox finding clothes, since I wore them to shop. Although, I ended up buying my lunchbox online...Anywhoo...
Today, I had church. And I was late for church. Thankfully, this church is big enough that they have 3 Sunday services (in addition to 2 Saturday services) so I made it just in time for the next one.
Okay, that's all I have the brain power to write for today. G'night, Y'all!

The Muppet Show - Season Two

see relatedClique Challenge: Day 2
As you may or may not know, I had an interview this morning at Jo-Ann Fabrics. (Unfortunately, they liked me...but there were still 4 others to be interviewed.) Anyway, I decided I should dress at least semi nice for that. Again, it's a terrible job, but it is a job.
I really should find my actual camera, then maybe you would be able to see it better. Since you can't see it, I'll list it:
-Green faux-polo shirt under
-Blue double v-neck tank under
-Medium-gray double pocket tie back vest
-Black skinny jeans
-Light blue socks
-Green plaid Skechers Cali flats
After I got home, the jeans morphed into shorts (a.k.a I put my black jean shorts on because it's hot out here.) and my flats were replaced by my black and pink sneakers. And, I steadily lost layers as I walked around town (again, it's hot!)
2 days in and it isn't that difficult. But, again, I'm only 2 days into it.
Anyone out there want to join me? Read the rules here, and let me know in the comments if you decide to take me up on this challenge.
